Art of Lights Created by Cutting-Edge Technology: Yokkaichi Nighttime Factory Views
There is a photo spot in Mie Prefecture that photographers from all over Japan and the world are keen to visit. No, it’s not the pristine nature of the mountains, nor an ancient temple (although those are great too). It’s the petroleum and chemical factories of Yokkaichi! “What is that?” I hear you say. Let me explain.
I recommend bringing a telephoto lens if you have one so that you can zoom in and create interesting compositions of the buildings and towers. A wide angle can also be nice to include reflections on the water.
Basic camera setting guide: As a rough starting point for any nighttime photos of the factories, I would suggest an exposure of around 5-10 seconds at around f5.6-8 with an ISO of around 400-800. That should at least get you in the ballpark. Of course, you should always have your camera locked down on a tripod whenever possible, and a remote or cable release is a plus so as not to introduce any unwanted camera shake to your images.
Lastly, I would like to point out a few things to keep in mind when viewing the factories. Entry inside the factory areas is prohibited to the public. There are some other areas that are off-limits also, so please be aware and not enter there. Some of these locations are only accessible by car, but please enjoy taking photos by observing public manners to avoid illegal parking, leaving garbage, excessive noise, etc.
Most importantly, have fun and happy shooting!
