The Matsusaka Castle Ruins are an incredible example of Japanese engineering and craftsmanship. The original castle was destroyed long ago, but the castle walls have stood the test of time. Walk back in time to the Edo Period as you climb the stone steps to the top of the ruins and look out over Matsusaka.
Built in 1588, all of the stones used to built the ancient walls and steps were carried and placed by the hands of 100s of workers. Through centuries of extreme weather, the Matsusaka Castle Ruins have remained and are a symbol of the city’s resilience.
The spot is beloved by local residents and visitors who come in the early spring will be treated to blooming plum blossoms. Later in the season, cherry blossoms and wisteria will make the castle ruins even more spectacular. For those who come in the autumn, the changing colors of the leaves on the ginko trees create a colorful palette for the eyes and soul.
