Minomushian 蓑虫庵

One of the retreats in Iga City where Basho would write poetry.

Minomushian is the only remaining retreat out of five that Basho used to frequent in Iga City. It is a simple house with a couple of tatami mat rooms. There is a serene garden space around the house and an indoor garden that can be viewed from one of rooms.
The house originally belonged to one of Basho’s disciples and when it was completed in 1688, Basho wrote the verse, “minomushi no ne wo kikini koyo kusa no io” which translates to “come and listen to the sound of bagworms thatched hermitage”. This is how the name of the retreat was born.
A visit to the unassuming Minomushian house on a quiet street in Iga City allows you to walk in Basho’s footsteps and be inspired as he was by the serenity and beauty of the spot.
