Haiseiden Hall was built close to Ueno Castle to honor the 300th anniversary of Basho’s birth and it is a beautiful tribute to one of Iga City’s most famous people. The distinctive circular design is an example of traditional Japanese architecture built in the modern era. The circular roof is known as the "traveler's umbrella" in reference to Basho’s extensive travels around Japan. It is also said that the other parts of the building’s design resemble the writer’s face and tarvel style of clothing.
Inside the building is a bust of Basho surrounded by stone columns and ornate woodwork. To many visitors, the building feels similar to a temple and that is a testament to the high level of respect and admiration that many Japanese people have for Basho.
There is no admission fee and Haiseiden can be visited freely all year round in Ueno Park.
