The Basho Memorial Museum is located in Ueno Park near Ueno Castle in Iga City. It may be small in size, but it contains an impressive collection of scrolls of poems written by one of the most celebrated poets in Japanese history, Matsuo Basho. The writer was born in Iga City and he is celebrated as a master of haiku poetry. Much of Basho’s writings were inspired by his travels around Japan in the 17th century and the museum also displays many maps that show the routes he took on his travels. As you browse the collection, you will see the Japan of Basho’s time represented beautifully in the writer’s work.
